Today started the same as every other morning, drive to the UPS store to pick up my mail and then head to VP HQ. I occasionally take a glance at the Pasadena Weekly stack on the floor near the mailboxes but usually it doesn’t catch my attention. Today, I did a double take at the cover for this week’s issue which features a story on Plasticgod who is best known for his mini stylized portraits of celebrities block-head style.
Turns out Mixi-Bang! in Pasadena will be holding a special signing tomorrow – Saturday, May 9th from 2-4 PM during which Plasticgod will unveil 20 new pieces.

This past Saturday evening, Nucleus paid homage to the video game phenomenon that is Street Fighter with Jab Strong Fierce. The group art show featured paintings, drawings, and a few sculptural interpretations of the iconic coin-op series. While many of the artists presented portraits of classic characters (ken, ryu, and chun-li were clearly the favorite subjects), some chose a broader approach including Roland Tamayo’s piece (above) which offers a compelling vision of a mystical Thailand ‘stage’ in which M. Bison and Sagat square off against one another.
For this celebration of all things Street Fighter, the gallery also hosted two fun side-events – a cosplay content and a single-elimination SF IV tourney. The tourney proved hugely popular. The large crowd was mesmerized by the projected images of the games on both main walls of the gallery – oohs and ahs echoed with each punishing move and with unexpected turns in the battles.
While taking pictures of the art was a little challenging, we managed to dodge tourney spectators long enough to put together a nice selection of cool pieces. Enjoy. With all the madness that ensued not too long ago at NYCC, some how myplasticheart managed to pull together an art exhibit shortly after. MPH proudly presents Guy McKinley’s solo show entitled “Jet-Black & Featherlight”. Guy will be making the trek all the way from the U.K. bringing new sets of paintings, prints and other goodies. He will also be at MPH to debut his new original resin figure based on his characters featured in his exhibit. This piece will be available for viewing opening night only. We were also lucky enough to snag a sneak peek at one of the pieces from the show, which can be seen below.
